From the quiet town of Caasinan, Cabadbaran City, emerged a woman whose story is a testament to faith, perseverance, and love—Jessenie Baguio-Gabisan, born on February 15, 1973. Her life is admired by many because of the way she faced trials with courage and used her struggles to inspire others. To her children, students, and community, she has always been a symbol of strength and compassion. She constantly reminds those around her that life is full of challenges, yet these are what make it meaningful and worth living.
Jessenie’s childhood was filled with joy and simplicity. She grew up in a closely knit family, the youngest among nine siblings, raised by loving and devoted parents who instilled in her discipline and faith. Her father was gentle and calm, while her mother was meticulous and organized—a reflection of her roots in Leyte, where cleanliness and timeliness were valued. Together, they built a strong foundation of love and spirituality, deeply rooted in their devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. Though both of her parents have passed away, Jessenie continues to honor them through prayer and by living the values they taught her—faith, humility, and respect.

Growing up, Jessenie loved traditional Filipino games such as karang-karang (stilts), patintero, and taguan. Despite the simplicity of life, her childhood was happy and pure. However, her family also faced poverty and hardship. She vividly remembers the days when they would barter corn for rice or eat sweet potatoes just to get by. Yet, instead of despairing, she learned gratitude, patience, and faith in God—values that shaped her into the resilient woman she is today.

Her passion for dancing began in her early years and became a constant part of her academic life. As a student, she was active in various school activities and performances. Her determination and hard work paid off when she became a scholar throughout high school and college. During her college years, she received a scholarship worth ₱7,000 per semester—a significant help when tuition was only ₱800. Because of her dedication, she graduated cum laude, proving that perseverance and faith can overcome any obstacle. Her mother’s guidance played a vital role in her discipline, teaching her to wake up early, stay punctual, and always strive for excellence. Her father, on the other hand, helped her learn to speak Tagalog, which built her confidence and communication skills.

In 1993, at only nineteen years old, Jessenie graduated from college and immediately started her teaching career. Even before officially finishing her studies, she had already taken and passed the Civil Service Examination with an impressive score. Just a week after graduation, she began working as a teacher. Several schools offered her positions—Las Nieves, Carmen, and Buenavista—but she chose to teach in Buenavista, Northern Mindanao, where her uncle, a school administrator, encouraged her to begin her career. There, she served as a Dance Instructor and MAPEH teacher, marking the beginning of her journey in education.

As a teacher, Jessenie’s influence extends beyond academics. She is known for sharing her faith with her students and for reminding them of God’s love and blessings. Her teaching is not just about lessons in the classroom but lessons in life—how to live with humility, patience, and gratitude. Many of her students thank her for being a mentor who guided them not only in learning but also in faith. For her, seeing her learners grow in wisdom and character is one of the greatest rewards of being an educator.

Life, however, was not without its struggles. Jessenie faced competition and unfair treatment in her environment, moments when she felt excluded or unappreciated. But rather than giving up, she used those experiences to strengthen her resolve. The more others doubted her, the more she worked hard to prove herself. She learned to stay patient and faithful, believing that one day, everything would turn in her favor.

The most painful turning point in her life came when her first husband passed away. The loss left her in deep grief and despair—so much that she once thought of ending her life. She questioned God and felt lost for years, even turning away from the church for a time. But through God’s grace, she survived that dark period and found her way back to faith. That experience became her spiritual awakening—the moment she realized that God had saved her for a greater purpose.

Today, Jessenie is married to Vincent Man-on Mencias, a fellow teacher from Balang-Balang, R.T.R Agusan del Norte. Together, they have built a loving and supportive home. She has two sons from her previous marriage—RJ Gabisan, a college student taking up Bachelor of Tourism Management, and Gabrielle Gabisan, a senior high school student. Her husband Vincent has embraced her children as his own, and their family stands as a testimony of love, acceptance, and the healing power of faith. Jessenie currently serves as a Master Teacher I at Agay National High School, where she continues to guide, inspire, and nurture young minds.

Those who know her describe her as both strong and compassionate. She admits she can be maldita or short-tempered at times, but she always makes up for it with kindness and understanding. She is hardworking and dedicated—someone who puts her heart into everything she does. Outside work, she enjoys watching movies and series, as well as spending time with family and friends. Her lively, outgoing nature shows her love for life and for making meaningful memories.

Jessenie firmly believes that life has three dimensions—the soul, body, and spirit—and that everyone will face two kinds of judgment, depending on their faith in Jesus Christ. For her, life should be lived with love, humility, and complete trust in God’s plan. She spreads the message that we must “spread love, share love, and do all things with love,” because no one knows what tomorrow may bring. She also believes that life is meaningful because out of trillions of possibilities, we were chosen by God to live. We are not accidents—we are part of His perfect plan.

Through her journey, Jessenie teaches others to always pray, have hope, and remain patient. Life is unpredictable, but with faith, anyone can endure its uncertainties. She believes that struggles and trials are not punishments but instruments of God to mold people into better, wiser individuals.

In the end, Jessenie Baguio-Gabisan’s life stands as a beautiful reflection of grace and perseverance. Her story reminds everyone that pain can lead to purpose, that faith can turn sorrow into strength, and that love—when shared freely—can change lives. Her legacy lives on through her students, her family, and everyone she has touched with her kindness and wisdom. She is not just a teacher, but a living example of God’s enduring love and the power of an unshakable faith.
